The Canary Islands are a well known destination for scuba diving. If we have to choose one island from the seven, of course it will be El Hierro.
The transparency of the water offers us normally 30 metres, and sometimes up to 50 metres visibility.
The temperature of the water in the coldest months of January and February is around 19ºC, getting the top in September at 24-25ºC. In the Autumn and the Spring the temperature is around 20-22ºC. The sea around El Hierro is the warmest in the Canary Islands.
The diversity and the quantity of life are other important characteristics of diving in El Hierro. There are only a few fishermen working in the area, and the population of the island is only around 10.000, so the underwater environment is very good.
In the sea of El Hierro we can find, native species from, like the Canarian lobster or the hogfish, cuttlefish from Macaronesia (Canaries, Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde), like the black moray eel or the island grouper. We also can find common species from North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, like the dusky grouper or breams... And tropical species like the manta ray, the giant puffer or the blue spotted trigger fish.
Of course there are also species that you only can find here, like the El Hierro spiny lobster or the Milliaris moray.
Sometimes we have nice encounters with turtles, dolphins, whales and different types of sharks.
Mar de las Calmas (Sea of the calms): in the southeast part of the island there is a natural area protected from the wind and the strong currents called the Calm Sea. This place allows us to do scuba diving activities all year, with good conditions to dive and navigate. This zone was declareda marine reserve in 1997 to preserve the environment and the marine species important to the fishermen.
The island also offers you very good food, fresh fish caught daily, respecting the environment. Natural landscapes that are almost wild and a very comfortable climate all year. Mild in winter, around 19ºC and not very hot in summer, around 25ºC.
Enjoy it dining in the terraces with short clothes, in a tranquil and relaxed place very difficult to find in any other diving destination of Europe.
